Aircraft for training / hire : PA28-161 Piper Cherokee Warrior II ZK-DXI : United States of America

The origins of the Piper Aircraft company were founded after 1920 when Bill Piper was a member of the board for Taylor Aircraft. At the time, Taylor Aircraft were producing a 20 hp monoplane aircraft which in time, would provide some of the inspiration for the Piper Cub.

In the post World War Two era, Piper expanded and in the 1960s, the low wing PA28-150 and PA28-160 (the Cherokee) were introduced as replacements for the Piper PA22 (the Tri Pacer and the Colt). The PA28 was designed and certified in 1960 and production commenced in January 1961.

These were initially offered with 150hp and 160hp Lycoming engines however in 1962 a 180hp engine was added for the PA28 series.

Over 30,000 fixed undercarriage PA-28 Cherokee series have been built, including approximately 5000 PA-28-151 & -161's of which 23 are currently on the CAA register in New Zealand. ZK-DXI is a PA28-161 Cherokee Warrior (which has a tapered wing and in this instance an engine upgrade from 160hp to 180hp) and was purchased (and refurbished) by the Club in 2003 as ZK-FVI. Due to the engine upgrade (done prior to the purchase by the NSAC), there is an allowable increase in MAUW from 2325lbs in a standard PA28-161 to 2440lbs.

This aircraft is used by the NSAC as a basic single engine IFR trainer as well as for general recreational flying for club members.

The NSAC also has other PA28 aircraft available for hire (ZK-DGH, FEL & KAT) which are 140, 180 and 161 airframe models within the PA28 series.
